Notice to Community: Con Edison Natural Gas Detectors & Service Line Inspections

Con Edison has made us aware of two ongoing safety programs that Community members should be aware of that require access to your home. While the subject of this communication is rather dry, this is an important safety program that will inevitably result in Con Edison (or likely their contractor) knocking on your door, so we encourage you to read on.

Natural Gas Detector Program

This is a free program to install Natural Gas Detectors in your home. How does this program work? Well, taken directly from their website: “The Natural Gas Detector is a safety device that monitors the air in your basement, typically in the area where the gas service pipe or other utilities enter your home or building. The Natural Gas Detector will sound an alarm if levels of natural gas in that area indicate a potential leak.

When the Natural Gas Detector alarms, it will beep loudly and say, “Danger – Gas leak explosion risk. Evacuate, then call 911.” The unit will also send an alert to Con Edison, and Con Edison and often the Fire Department will then respond and investigate. The alarm will continue to sound until Con Edison arrives and silences the unit.”

For Residents looking for more information on the Natural Gas Detectors Con Edison is installing they can call Con Edison customer service line and speak with a representative at 1-800-75CONED (752-6633) or visit: Natural Gas Detector Frequently Asked Questions | Con Edison

The below link contains a testimonial from a Con Edison customer telling their story about how their natural gas detector located a gas leak in their home and kept their family out of harms’ way.

Mandatory Natural Gas Service Line Inspections

The Natural Gas Service Line Inspection program is designed to inspect the gas line and meter at each customer’s premise to check for corrosion and leaks.  This program is being done throughout New York State (see New York Public Service Commission Order) and is a critical safety program.  These mandatory inspections generally take approximately 15 minutes to perform. For the safety of Con Edison customers, if a leak is found in piping and Con Edison is unable to repair during the visit, the gas service will be disconnected until repairs are made by a licensed plumber.  It may be advisable to have your plumber pre-inspect your piping prior to Con Edison's arrival to avoid any surprise shutdowns. These inspections are only taking place at customer premises with their gas meter inside the home. Prior to an inspection you will likely receive something in the mail, and you may receive a call. After each inspection a sticker is placed on the gas meter confirming the inspection was completed. Failure to comply may result in fees

For residents looking to schedule an appointment for their Natural Gas Service Line Inspection they can call 1-800-643-1289 weekdays between 7:30AM and 3PM or they can email coned at gasinspections@coned.com.
