Skating is back this weekend at the Tarrytown Lakes!

skating tarrytown lakes January 2022

Good news for skaters!  Although we had some challenging rain and snow this week, the cold snap we’re experiencing is allowing us to reopen the lakes again for skating this weekend.  Hours are 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Sunday. Remember to dress warmly, in layers, with gloves, hat, scarf and sunglasses.  Breakfast, lunch and dinner with hot coffee, cocoa and tea are available at many restaurants, shops and delis in our Downtown!

COVID News – Positivity Rates, Test Kits and Masks

COVID Positivity rates for Westchester are dropping, which is good news. Over the past 3 weeks, the positivity rates dropped from 25% to 9%, so that’s encouraging news. People should continue to get vaccinated, and wear masks when indoors and unable to socially distance.

The federal government is distributing free COVID tests for every household, The following is the link where you can sign up to obtain the tests:  https://www.covidtests.gov/

The federal government also announced its plans to make 400 million N-95 masks available for free at pharmacies and community centers across the country.  More information should be made public soon.

Con Edison Gas Main Update

As of next week, here is the latest update on Con Edison gas main work around the Village.

  • Wilson Park will be continuing for another 2 weeks of excavation work.  Restoration will begin in February to the level of backfilling the trenches.
  • Walden and Beech will continue for another 2 weeks
  • Neperan and McKeel – work on Neperan Ave., heading uphill from Hamilton, will start the week of February 2nd. The homeowners in that area will have to relocate their street- parking spaces temporarily while construction is taking place.
  • Croton, LeGrande and Hamilton – work is continuing, with gas line work starting next week into the following week.  Parking permits issued for Croton, LeGrande and Hamilton are extended through the end of February.  Free parking with a Village-issued permit is allowed in the McKeel Parking Lot through February.
  • West of Broadway work – along Dixon and North Washington Streets – will begin as soon as the Croton / LeGrande / Hamilton work is finished.  We’re still looking at another week to few weeks. A specific start date is not available.

Board of Trustees Roundup

Here is a summary of some important things that were approved at the Board Meetings of January 3 and January 18th

  • An agreement was approved for the Village to continue to participate in the Town of Greenburgh law enforcement Task Force
  • A contract was authorized to repair the washed-away slope at the Tarrytown Lakes Paths and Parking Lot, that was damaged by the intense rains from Tropical Storm Ida
  • A code change to the Filming Code was amended to make the violation for filming without a permit double the filming permit fee
  • The Board authorized the Village to work with the Rotary Club to set up a Little Free Food Pantry cabinet on the north side of Village Hall, on a trial basis, so that people in need of emergency food can stop by the pantry and pick up some emergency food to make a meal for themself or their family.

Spring Events

The Village is continuing to plan for our normal Spring events, provided that COVID infection rates continue to decline.  At this time, we are working with the Parade Committee to keep the St. Patrick’s Day parade on schedule for Sunday, March 13, 2022, and we are planning for other regular events in the Village like the Egg Hunt, the annual Earth Day Clean up, the Duck Derby and more.  The TaSH Winter Farmer's market takes place every weekend down at Lot D by the Recreation Center.  Stop down and check it out!

Restaurant Sidewalk Cafés also have been extended into March on a trial basis so that they can be year round.  The Village will be considering changing the Village Code to allow that on a year round basis.

Village Budget

The Village is starting the planning process for our Annual Village Budget.  Our Fiscal Year runs from June 1 through May 31 every year.  By law, the Tentative Budget has to be introduced on or before March 20 of each year, and has to be adopted with any amendments on or before May 1 of each year.  As we have done for every year since it was enacted, the Village plans to continue to comply with the New York State 2% Tax Cap, which has allowances for growth like new construction that gets added to the tax base.  Copies of the current budget and past budgets are on the Village website at www.tarrytowngov.com, under the link for the Treasurer’s Office.  The upcoming Tentative budget will be posted there in March after it’s released.

Water Violation Notice for byproducts of chlorination

The Village of Tarrytown was recently required to publish and circulate a notice about our public water supply, using a form that the County and State Health Departments want followed. Some things we want to make clear to everyone are as follows:

  • The Village purchases our treated water from New York City, through its Department of Environmental Protection (NYC DEP)
  • The Village of Tarrytown’s water is safe to drink, and is in compliance with County, State and Federal guidelines
  • All of our drinking water is chlorinated by the NYC DEP before it gets to Tarrytown, which is done to kill bacteria and parasites like Cryptosporidium, cysts like Giardia and other potentially harmful organisms that exist in surface water
  • The chlorination process produces byproduct chemicals that we have to monitor to make sure the levels don’t exceed acceptable limits.  Two byproduct chemicals of the chlorination process– Total Haloacetic acids and Methyl Iodine - were elevated at two of the locations where we test the water – Village Hall, and the Tarryhill Clubhouse
  • The average elevation levels were 2 one-thousandths and 4 one thousandths of a milligram per liter over the acceptable limits, which are extremely low amounts.
  • The solutions we are implementing are to cycle the water in our holding tanks, and to flush our hydrants more frequently, to get these byproducts out of the water.
  • Taking these measures will keep our water safe to drink and bathe with, and make it healthier over the long run for people with weaker immune systems.
  • For anyone concerned about this in your home, we recommend that you run the water out of your sink for a couple of minutes, especially in the morning, to flush anything that might have built up in the pipes in your home during long periods when you are not using your water.

We wish everyone a happy and safe winter weekend!
