Multimodal Project along South Broadway/Route 9 Underway

In March 2023, the New York State Thruway Authority commenced a $13.9 million multimodal project along South Broadway (Route 9). Years in the making, the multifaceted project will extend the Governor Mario M. Cuomo Bridge side path south to Lyndhurst Mansion and includes the construction of a 270-foot-long pedestrian bridge over the Thruway I-87/I-287 to improve access and enhance safety for pedestrians and cyclists.

The project will also:

  • Widen the ramps at Thruway Interchange 9 leading to and from South Broadway;
  • Add a second left turn lane from South Broadway to the southbound Thruway entrance ramp;
  • Install a traffic signal on South Broadway at Paulding Avenue to make it easier for motorists to turn;
  • Repair and resurface South Broadway from Route 119 to just south of Gracemere Lane;
  • Relocate a village water main onto the South Broadway bridge.

Background Summary:

Discussions for this project began in 2012, following a recommendation to 1) add a second left turning lane on southbound South Broadway into Thruway Interchange 9 and 2) build a bicycle/pedestrian side path south over the Thruway.  Residents of the Irving Neighborhood also called for safety improvements to the nearby Paulding Avenue/S Broadway intersection.

Beginning in 2013, meetings were held to include a replacement of the village’s 80-year-old water main, which currently traverses under the Thruway.  The village and the Authority agreed to construct a new water main, in addition to a separate bicycle pedestrian bridge, over the highway.

In 2017, following public feedback received at an Open House held on October 4 at the then Double Tree Hotel, officials decided the project would also include a new traffic signal at Paulding Avenue and that the side path would extend further south to Lyndhurst.

In 2022, Gianfia Corporation of Hawthorne, N.Y. was awarded the contract following a competitive bidding process.

The Village is working closely with the state and will keep residents apprised of the latest developments.
