atlantic menhadenWhy are there Fish Dying on the Banks of the Hudson River?

We’ve received some inquires recently about Fish washing up on the shores of the Hudson River… seemingly as if they’re trying to escape the river at times… Well, there is a defined reason as outlined by the NYSDEC and it’s a bit grim for this particular species of fish. Here is what we learned from the NYSDEC Today.

DEC had been monitoring the situation and tracking its extent. Die-off events of Menhaden are not unusual and there are various naturally occurring causes for these events. Fish, such as bunker, that swim in large schools are particularly vulnerable to low dissolved oxygen, certain environmental pressures, and pathogens. Fish kills of this nature, don’t necessarily indicate an environmental problem and do not generally impact overall numbers of Atlantic menhaden in our region. In fact, the high local abundance of menhaden around NY can lead to these events happening more often.

DEC has collected water quality data and samples of fish for further evaluation. The data from these events are valuable for evaluating trends in environmental health and implementing new strategies to keep our waterways healthy. Please continue to report fish kills by email to marinefisheries@dec.ny.gov or call 631-444-0495 for marine waters or 845-256-3199 in the Hudson River.

A NY Non-Profit has also been following the issue. Learn more at https://www.riverkeeper.org/blogs/ecology/dead-dying-fish-are-being-spotted-by-the-hundreds-along-the-hudson/

Winter Is here & Spring Building Prep

Wow. Is it the end of 2020 already? As the cold starts to break, our Building Department would like to remind residents & landlords to check their checking their residential heating equipment. With so many working from home these days, home systems are going to be “taxed” more than usual. Best to perform preventative maintenance immediately on your heating systems as soon as practical. Also ensure you’re prepared for those first snow-flakes (salt, shovels, and plowing contractors). Homeowners with sidewalks abutting their property should also familiarize themselves with our Sidewalk Snow Removal Law.

We also recommend that now is the best time to plan for those Spring projects. This is especially important as you may be unaware that the window project you have planned for March may need Architectural Review Board Approval. Or that retaining wall needs review by the planning board. Best to call the Building Department at 914-631-3668 Monday – Friday, 8:30am – 4:30pm with any questions about your project to set your expectations now and reduce or remove project delay!
