Snow Shoveling Safety Tips

Snow removal Safety Precautions – the following are some tips based on information from the National Safety Council -- https://www.nsc.org/community-safety/safety-topics/seasonal-safety/winter-safety/winter

  1. Persons who are over 40 years of age, or who are relatively inactive, should be careful and pace yourselves when shoveling snow or clearing walkways.
  2. If you have any medical condition such as heart trouble, do not shovel without clearing it with your doctor first.
  3. DO NOT shovel immediately after eating, or while you are smoking.
  4. DO NOT leave all of the shoveling until the end of the storm, as it will make the job much more difficult.
  5. DO NOT pick up too much snow at one time.  Heavy loads put strain on backs and joints.
  6. DO – take appropriate steps to stretch and warm up before, during and after shoveling.
  7. DO – lift with your legs bent and not with your back.  Try and keep your back as straight as possible.
  8. DO – Rest often and take breaks.
  9. DO – Dress warmly, and prevent frost-bite.  If your clothes get wet, especially your extremities, change into dry clothes and avoid injury from frost bite

Snow Blower Safety tips -- Be safe with these tips from the American Society for Surgery of the Hand and the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons:

  1. If the blower jams, turn it off, and brace it with a strong block of wood while you clear the jam so that it does not move, or rotate, causing possible injury.
  2. Keep your hands away from the moving parts
  3. Do not drink alcohol and use the snow blower
  4. Do not operate a snow blower in an enclosed area, like a shed or a garage, because it increases the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.
  5. Refuel your snow blower when it is OFF, never when it is running

Navigating Power Outages

  1. If your electricity goes out, report it to Con Edison at 1-800-752-6633.  You can also call the Tarrytown Police Desk at 914-631-5544 to report the outage.  If you have any information about the cause of the outage (downed tree, blown transformer) that is extremely helpful.
  2. DO NOT use your oven to stay warm during a power outage.
  3. DO NOT use a grill or a kerosene or propane heater to stay warm indoors during a power outage. Using these devices indoors creates a major risk and likelihood of carbon monoxide poisoning and a high risk of death.
  4. DO NOT - If you have a generator, DO NOT connect it to your home's power system unless it has been properly installed and disconnects you from the main power grid when it is operating. If you do not disconnect from the power grid, you can transmit electricity back into the power supply system, which could be harmful or deadly for Con Edison workers.
  5. DO - If you have a regular wood stove or fireplace, you can use it for heat.
  6. DO - Check on your elderly neighbors or those who may have medical conditions or use medical machinery that operates on electricity. Make sure they are dressed appropriately warm. If someone has a health condition and requires machinery that uses electricity, move him or her to a place where electricity is working.

Con Edison Gas Main Update

Here is the latest update on Con Edison gas main work around the Village.

  • Con Edison’s contractors will be working during the snow storm to help keep the steel plates over the excavations clear, while the Tarrytown DPW crews plow and salt around them.
  • Mckeel Ave. work will be continuing for approximately another 2 weeks
  • Hamilton Ave. – Parking will need to be blocked off on both sides of Hamilton for an entire day from Broadway to Croton Ave., with the goal of doing major gas main installation work on Thursday.  Residents will be able to use their resident parking permits to park in the McKeel Parking Lot during the construction.
  • Wilson Park Drive work is continuing. Restoration and backfilling of trenches will continue into February.
  • West of Broadway work – along Dixon and North Washington Streets – will begin as soon as the Croton / LeGrande / Hamilton work is finished.  We’re looking at approximately another two weeks. A specific start date has not yet been established.
  • Main At Broadway - Service Line Work at Main Street and Broadway will be required, which will require several days of road closure at that intersection, heavily impacting Main Street.  No specific date has been set, but work could start in another 2 to 3 weeks, and take 3 to 4 days.

Tarrytown Police Department Officers Assist FBI with massive seizure of “ghost guns”

ghost guns

This week Tarrytown Police Officers who participate in Westchester County’s Real Time Crime Task Force and Greenburgh’s Drug and Alcohol Task Force contributed to a major FBI operation that resulted in the arrest of 11 individuals and the seizure of more than 100 illegal firearms. The seizure followed a six-month long investigation into “ghost guns,” weapons without serial numbers often assembled at home.

Congratulations on the excellent work of our officers and the success of the multi-agency operation in getting these weapons off the streets of Westchester County. For more on Operation Casper, check out Westchester County’s press release HERE.

COVID Update

After the holidays, the COVID positivity rates skyrocketed up to 25% across the Westchester County region.  However, the good news as of today is that the positive test rates are down to 5.9%.  Hospitalizations are declining but remain high.  The Village of Tarrytown encourages everyone who is eligible to be vaccinated to do so, and obtain your booster if and when you are eligible.  Be sure to wear a mask when you are indoors and unable to socially distance yourself from others.

Bee Line Bus Update

Westchester Bee Line Bus Service will be suspended tomorrow due to the impending Nor’easter snow storm.

Metro North Hudson Line Update

Metro-North strongly urges customers to avoid unnecessary travel tomorrow, January 29.

*** Service tomorrow is scheduled to run hourly on the Hudson, Harlem, and New Haven Lines. ***

Customers should anticipate scattered delays due to the weather. If customers must travel tomorrow, please use extra caution on platforms and hold on to handrails when using stairs. Plan for Skating after the snow storm

The Tarrytown Parks and Recreation Departments will be working to clean off the snow from the ice on the lakes after the snow storm, as soon as they are able to finish up their snow clearing efforts on sidewalks and heavily used areas elsewhere throughout the Village.  We hope to have skating resume Sunday afternoon, but if it’s a heavier snowfall skating may not be able to resume until Monday. We will post hours for skating when we have a report back from them.

We wish everyone a happy and safe winter weekend!
