Winter Weather: Keep sidewalks clear of ice

Winter Weather: Keep sidewalks clear of ice

The Winter Weather Advisory from the National Weather Service will remain in effect today through 7pm. Expect freezing rain, possibly mixing with sleet in the afternoon, and additional ice accumulations of up to one tenth of an inch.

Let’s all help keep Tarrytown residents safe by keeping our sidewalks free and clear of ice. As a reminder, Section 259-37 of Village Code stipulates that “The owner or occupant of any premises shall cause the contiguous sidewalks and, in the case of multifamily dwellings, all driveways and access and exit roads on the premises to be cleared of snow and ice" within 18 hours after a snowfall or if the snow has melted, ice must be cleared within two hours. "If the melted snow and ice shall be frozen to a degree that it cannot be removed within said period by customary means, the owner or occupant of the abutting premises shall cause salt, sand, ashes, sawdust or other suitable material to be strewn upon the sidewalks, driveways and access and exit roads within the said period.”

To report unsafe conditions on sidewalks, call the Building Department: 631-3668.

A little salt goes a long way.

To prevent ice buildup use salt and sand sparingly because it flows directly into our rivers, lakes, and streams.
