Tree Lighting, Holiday Market and Winter Stroll Kick Off Season

Despite Mother Nature's attempts to thwart the festivities, the Village sparkled on Saturday for the launch of the holiday season. The December 3rd events came together through the collaboration of the Village, the Sleepy Hollow Tarrytown Chamber of Commerce and the TaSH. Thanks to all who helped bring joy and cheer to residents, and shoppers to our Downtown.

The TaSH Holiday Market grows in size every year. The addition of a trolley to the Winter Stroll was popular, shepherding passengers between the park, and the downtowns in Sleepy Hollow and Tarrytown.

Peter Royston's interactive Pirate Santa performance on Main Street will be followed by a play at the Tarrytown Music Hall later this month.

The Main Street Fire House was open to show off the bright red engines and bring wonder, joy, and hot cocoa to winter strollers.

Santa Coming to Town

Big news coming out of the North Pole!

Santa will be visiting Tarrytown this Saturday, December 10th!

Because the reindeer will be resting up for their long flight, Santa will be hitching a ride with the Tarrytown Fire Department!

See the attached map to find out when you can see him drive through town with his helpers! Please keep in mind that these times are approximate and Santa may arrive slightly ahead or behind schedule. Be on the lookout this Saturday night!

Winter is Coming...

Weather reports indicate there may be a light snowfall Sunday night (12/11) into Monday morning.

As winter storm season approaches a few reminders to help keep everyone safe:

During a Storm

  • Stay off the roads..
  • Do what you can to remove parked cars from streets.
  • Cars parked on snow emergency streets during snow emergencies will be ticketed and towed.

During Snow Plow Operations

  • Wear high visibility or reflective clothing while walking on roads during plowing operations – avoid dark clothing and walking along the curb line.
  • Do not put snow from driveways and sidewalks into the paved street.
  • Plowing in” driveways by DPW plows is inevitable and unavoidable. We regret the inconvenience. Please schedule your private snow removal after the storm.

After a Storm, Cleaning Up

  • As a reminder, property owners are responsible for clearing snow and ice from sidewalks. The Village Code (259-37) requires that snow is removed within 18 hours after snowfall, except in the case of properties in the Restricted Retail Zoning Districts and the Neighborhood Shopping Zoning Districts in the Village, which shall have the snow and ice removed at all times between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m. Ice must be removed within two hours except between the hours of 10pm and 5am, in which case, it needs to be removed by 7am the next morning.
  • When choosing a de-icing product, please keep in mind that rock salt can be harmful to concrete. Calcium Chloride is a better choice for sidewalk maintenance.
  • Do not push snow from the sidewalk into the street. Clear the snow from around the fire hydrant if there is one in front of your property. Do not cover crosswalks with snow. You should move the snow to your front yard, behind the stoop line, or to the grassy curb strip if one exists. Where possible, try to clear a path at least four feet wide along the sidewalk. Corner property owners should clear a path to the crosswalk, including any pedestrian ramps, and where the snow has melted and creates a puddle, disperse the water away from the crosswalk. This will help people in wheelchairs, people with children in strollers, students going to school, and individuals with mobility-assistance devices.

Thank you for your cooperation this winter in keeping Tarrytown roadways and sidewalks clear for all.

Tarrytown Police, Sleepy Hollow Police and Scout Pack 22 collaborate to give back this holiday season by "adopting" eight area families and their wish lists, beginning with the donation of a tree, decorations and lights from riverside hose Company.

Friendly Reminder:

Please enjoy the beautiful trails in Tarrytown, but limit the number of dogs you walk at one time.

Metro North Cares Program

MTA Metro-North Railroad announced the rebrand of its “Call Ahead” program to “MNR Care,” a customer assistance program that will serve Metro-North riders with mobility disabilities who need assistance accessing or navigating the railroad system. The program was rebranded to align with the Long Island Rail Road’s LIRR Care program. The on-call service is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, including holidays, to help customers, including those with mobility disabilities, who require assistance to board and/or exit from a Metro-North train.

Customers can use the service when traveling to or from any station on the Metro-North system. Customers can request assistance by contacting Metro-North ahead of their travel, by dialing 511, 212-532-4900, or 877-690-5114 for Connecticut riders. A Metro-North representative will then contact train crews to notify them to be on alert for customers requiring assistance. This helps train crews know to be ready to find a customer who needs assistance on the platform and deploy the bridge plate if needed. At Grand Central Terminal, courtesy wheelchair assistance is provided upon request.

County Tax for Home Heating Suspended for Three Months

From the Examiner: "Westchester County officials announced last week that the county portion of the sales tax on home heating sources will be suspended for three months in hopes of giving beleaguered homeowners a break on energy prices amidst skyrocketing costs.

County Executive George Latimer said the 4 percent exemption will be in effect for three months, from Dec. 1 to Feb. 28, through the heart of the upcoming winter season. If a homeowner needs to fill a 250-gallon tank with heating oil at about $6 a gallon, for example, there would be a savings of about $60 with each delivery, he said."
