Winter Storm

Many thanks to our Department of Public Work and Parks Department for great work clearing streets and pathways during today's winter storm. Please be sure to clear off the sidewalks in front of your homes and businesses. If you can't remove the snow and ice, apply salt, sand or other slip-prevention material. Thank you for helping to keep pedestrians safe in these wintry months.

Con Edison work continues

The winter storm today postponed completion of Con Edison’s work on Main Street at the juncture with Broadway. The Con Ed crews should wrap up the Main Street work on Monday, but be aware that parking will be restricted and detours will be routed down John Street and Kaldenberg until the work is completed.

Other Con Ed updates:

Wildey Street: Con Ed has postponed the launch of work on Wildey Street, and now expects to begin in mid to late March.

Neperan, McKeel, Suncliff, Warren, Walden: Expect to complete work by March 4.

Croton, LeGrande, Hamilton: Expect to complete work by March 11.

Road restoration in the areas where Con Ed is completing work will commence toward the end of March. Cars will need to be relocated off of streets while road restoration is taking place. We will notify residents in the affected areas.

Important Notice from the Department of Public Works: Rags Clog Sewer Lines!

The Village of Tarrytown Department of Public Works has been experiencing an alarming number of clogged pipes in our sanitary sewer system due to foreign material being flushed down the toilets or drains. The sanitary sewer system is designed to handle water, human waste and tissue paper only!

Recently, we have extracted an excessive amount of rags in the public sewer system throughout the village - specifically in the West Elizabeth Street and Meadow Street neighborhoods, respectively.

Extraneous material including many household products that are labeled and marketed as DISPOSABLE and/or FLUSHABLE have the ability to clog and stop up not only the sewer line on your property, but also cause blockages and service problems in the public sewer system.

Do not flush the listed items; place them in the trash, not the toilet. Examples of what should not be flushed down toilets or poured down drains are as follows:

  •  Cloth rags or towels
  • Baby wipes, Toilet wipes, Towelettes, Disinfecting wipes, or cloth wipes of any kind (even if the container indicates that they are “flushable”)
  • Paper (other than toilet paper/tissue)
  • Medications (Prescription, or over-the-counter)
  • Feminine hygiene products of any kind
  • Beauty products, Q-Tips, dental floss
  • Plastics of any kind
  • Grease of any kind – especially cooking grease
  • Garden supplies (such as pesticides, fertilizers)
  • Paint, varnish, paint remover
  • Motor oil, gasoline, or any explosive material

And most importantly…ANY ITEM THAT IS NOT TOILET PAPER (including masks, gloves, etc.)

Please be mindful of what goes down the drain – it just doesn’t magically disappear. Sewage back-ups entering the dwelling or street are a costly and unpleasant experience.

Please share this information with all occupants and users of your property (including cleaning companies, contractors, etc.).

If you have any questions about this notice, please call the Village of Tarrytown Department of Public Works at (914) 631-0356 or email dpw@tarrytowngov.com

Update to luring incident from Tarrytown Police Department

We know many residents in Tarrytown and beyond were concerned about the report of a luring incident involving two men in a white van. Following a thorough investigation, Police Chief Barbelet wants to reassure residents that there is no actual threat to the community from individuals in a white van.

The following update was released from the Tarrytown Police Department:

“Our detective division spent numerous hours conducting interviews and searching/reviewing camera footage. At this time in the investigation we can say with confidence that the complaint we received is unsubstantiated and not supported by any exterior facts. There is no threat related to a white van or any other vehicle that the Department is currently aware of.  What is important moving forward is that all children feel comfortable reporting incidents such as these and many others to the police, their parents and any other responsible adult.”

High energy bills? Thinking of switching suppliers? How to sort through ESCO offers and good news for Westchester Power customers

As energy prices soar higher and higher, there is good news for Tarrytown residents enrolled in the Westchester Power Community Choice Aggregation program. Because of the Village’s participation in the program, customers have a locked-in fixed supply rate through at least June 2022. While Con Ed’s supply rates rose to $0.169/kwh in January, Westchester Power customers energy rates remained at $0.074/kwh. Despite this substantial savings, delivery charges, which account for most of the bill, are still set by Con Ed. If you opted out of the Westchester Power program and are interested in opting in, first, you can learn more by visiting the Westchester Power website, and check out this helpful FAQ (versión en español). To opt in, you can call (914) 242-4725.

If you are getting notices from other energy suppliers offering alternative supply rates and you would like to learn more, it is important to pay attention to all contract terms. Starting customers at a low rate and then increasing the rate without notification is a frequent practice called "slamming," so buyers must be aware. New York State provides a helpful tool to compare Energy Supply Companies (ESCOs) and their offers called Power to Choose.
